Unity Dinner and Award for Civicness

The SMA Unity Dinner is a biennual celebration of the work being done in South Memphis, by SMA, its affiliate communities, partners, and concerned citizens.At the dinner, the Elbert “Skip” Rich Memorial Award for Civicness is awarded, in honor of a lifelong community organizer, who tragically passed away at the age of 39. Mr. Rich was a cherished Board Member of SMA, Inc. He was an employee of FedEX, alumnus of Hamilton High School and the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Executive Secretary for the Memphis Police Department Ambassador Association, Founder and President of Barksdale/Cloverdale Neighborhood Association, Founder and Secretary of David Street Block Club, member of City of Memphis Beautiful Commission, political and a community activist who dedicated his life to the service of others. It is with great honor that we dedicate this award in his name.

2014 SMA Unity Brunch

Saturday, October 11th

The 2012 SMA Unity Dinner was held on October 13, and featured DJ Dewayne Benton from 95.7 FM Hallelujah as emcee and special guest Congressman Cohen as keynote speaker. Attendees enjoyed dinner and performances by Voices of MAHS (Memphis Academy of Health Sciences), and observed SMA participants sharing their very personal stories about how they came to foster care and to SMA. It was an enjoyable and meaningful evening. The Elbert “Skip” Rich awards went to: Audrey Gonzalez from Juvenile Court and the Foster Care Review Board; Sheila Flemming-Hunter from The Black Rose Foundation and Memphis CARES Mentoring Movement; and The Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis.
